Hi Richard!Your name same with me,
ok about your question.Basically there are many different types/materials of tile available on the market. It would be best to discuss your needs with the customer service representative at the store to see which type of material would be well suited for your daily use. As for the colour of your backsplash, I think a colour combination of the floor, countertop and cabinets looks the most pleasing to the eye. Please see attached photo to give you an idea of what might work. Just remember there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to picking a backsplash, just go with the look that you like.
I also offer an ‘Ask the Decorator’ service on my website. I would be happy to be of further assistance to you if needed.

richard there are tiles that you can buy now that are made out of plastic. they are a replica of the old tin ceiling tiles. they come in different embossed styles and can be painted. i have seen them done in a faux finish that looks pretty cool. they are a very inexpensive and easy way to made a nice back splash. they simply glue onto the wall and can be cut with scissors or a knife. they can be bought at any home improvement store.
A classic backsplash for a 1911 house would be tile. the ones that I think are the best for this are often called subway tile. they are about 3" high by 6" wide. they should be installed with a very thin grout line. like 1/16-1/8". You can add a little horizontal stripe for a punch of color if you like. this is a classic look that compliments any period house – especially earlier 1900′s. Enjoy! that era is my favorite house period.
