Does a slide-in range in an island have to be vented to the outside?
Our old slide-in range is about 20 years old, located in the island with drywall behind it and barstools behind that. We are getting a new slide-in range next week and have been told that it needs venting room behind it. Can we just knock out some of the drywall under the counter? It’s all "empty space" behind the range.

at least, this is the code in Oregon.
however, if all you are doing is replacing a preexisting stove in a preexisting kitchen, then the "grandfather clause" permits you to simply replace the range without having to bring the installation up to current building codes.
if your budget and the construction of your house permits, a vent hood, or a downdraft vent might be a good investment, but I don’t think the codes will require you to upgrade an existing installation.
It depends a lot on the model that you bought and the features it has. Your sales person should be able to supply you with exact info as to what is required. Some units have downdraft exhaust fans built in to them and would require duct work to the outside. I would get more info before busting any holes.
You’ve actually given us very little information here to render any sort of decent guess. Is any of this gas, electric, does it have a grill, vent fan built in ???/ all info that’s needed to be able to really answer this properly.
