How do I make a kitchen table look 'rustic'?
I have gotten all the varnish off and sanded an old kitchen table. The look I’m wanting is that rustic black look and I’m not sure what to do now. Do I use a spray paint or a paint brush? What do you put on the table after it’s painted so it won’t chip and so I can clean it?

On decorating shows, I have seen them beat it with a chain to give it that ‘well used’ look. Then paint over it lightly with a dark color (paintbrush) to fill in the holes/chinks/gouges. You will need to paint or seal over that. Use a good quality water-resistant varnish over the whole thing, using several coats on the top of the table.
Leave it as it is. Over time you and your kids will make it look rustic / used. It will be a testament to your life at it. You will be able to spot the different stains which will mean a lot to you but be a mystery to anyone else.
Do NOT use spray paint. Use a water- based acrylic, paint it and when dry, use a fine grit sandpaper to sand the edges.(if you want that distressed look) a couple of coats of polyurethane (Varathane) will seal it after painting. I have used a roller to paint on large surfaces and then gone over it lightly with a good brush to smooth it out.
I’ve seen people use a chain on wood tables, and hit it over and over until it looks like worn wood. They’ve said it’s also a great way to get your frustrations out.
