There are some great stains at the paint store to do this. Sherwin-Williams stores have some good ones, and so do most of the chain home stores (Lowes, Home Depot)
With Dark Stain
Stain? I would get some paint… Off white, probably a darker white and paint the cabinets… then, shadow in the edges with some black paint…(bit smeared or even enamel on latex, so that they wont "bond" properly and you will have a contrast and ancient cracking type, so it will look old fashion.
My buddy would make projects from wood, and give them to his sister, who would paint them garish colors, three of four coats with huge paint brushes, sloppily and you would see some colors come through and she would SELL these as antiques!! (CAN YOU SAY RIP OFF!!!).
Basically antiques in kitches were always a white color, (for cleanlinees), and black for the handles… (Just look at any old house and you will find that the base coat is usually white!).
Ok, my two cents worth..
