3 comfortably, 4 is you want to get intimate.
3 if no one smells bad
3 – people need room to move and eat
Ideally, according to National Kitchen and Bath Association guidelines, each person should have 2 feet of space all to themselves. So three people could sit at a 6 foot island. Of course, NKBA guidelines are not law, you could squeeze in a fourth person
Also, if no traffic passes behind your island, you should have about 36” of clearance from the counter edge where people will be sitting to the wall or nearest obstruction behind it. You should have more like 65” of clearance from the counter where people will be sitting to the nearest wall/obstruction behind it if people will be walking behind where people will be sitting. You would need the extra space ot allow for simultaneous sitting and walking patterns, if that makes any sense. Otherwise, people would have to stand up and puch in their chairs to allow people to get behind them.
Enjoy your island!
