You’re looking at about $10,000 depending on where you’re shopping and the TV’s you’re looking at. (Don’t waste your money on anything other than HD ready flat-panels)
MB about $1,500 (Target) to $3,000 (Pier 1)
FR – say 800-1200 for couch/loveseat, 1000 for entertainment unit, 1,000 for the TV and say $500 for other decor (adds up quick)
Living Room, 800-1600 for couch/lovseat, 2 chairs at $200 a piece, $600 for tables and decor
Kitchen, figure on $400 – $1200
Dining Room – formal table & chairs and coordinated hutch, could be anywhere from $1500 to $5000
This can vary GREATLY depending on your style, preferences (size/brand), how much decor, and whether you buy things discount/sale/used.
However, ballpark numbers:
Master bedroom — $3K-6K (including mattress and bedding)
Family room — $4-6K
Living room — $2-4K
Kitchen — $100-1K
Dining room — $1K-4K
Basically, $10K will get a full house of decent stuff, and about $20K for more luxurious, but still moderate range stuff. You can easily double that amount if you want really nice furniture… And you could easily spend that much ($40K) per room for high end stuff.
If you are willing to really shop sales/buy used, you can furnish a house for about $6-7K… However, be sure to learn enough about furniture that you can be sure you’re getting decent quality pieces.
We aren’t looking to be featured on any decorating shows or anything, but probably closer to Pier 1 than garage sale quality. I failed to mention that registries will likely take care of tableware, small appliances, bedding, etc (pretty much everything but the big stuff). I was thinking around $10k myself, with a little wiggle room. My thoughts were:
3k for Master
3k for Family
1k for Living
3k for Dining & Kitchen (assuming we have a Dining)
Guest rooms (if any) would be taken care of as well
Also, I live near Chicago, not California, NYC or Milan. I would imagine that would affect the budget somewhat.
Any revised thoughts?
