As for the basement, I’d pick something other than white only b/c I lived in apartments for 10 years where I was not allowed to paint & got *really* bored with the white. You can stay light, but maybe a light blue or tan.
Kitchen – how about green above the chair rail, to pick up the green accents in the floor? I recommend playing around with Sherwin Williams Color Visualizer for ideas. At the top of the page, click on "paint an interior" and they you can select a room to try out different color combos. Neat!
grey would b nice.. blue-grey or tan or like u mentioned… grey bttm. w/ mayb a blue-grey top or even a red top to compliment the kitchen. Or even a taupe which they have that would come close to grey coloring.
Then accent the softa w/ pillows of red to compliment the kitchen.
