My 4 year old LOVES medicine…?
Help… does anyone elses child love to take medicine. Mine begs me for it. Yesterday I caught her in the kitchen with a couple rolaids in her hand and I ran to snatch them and she threw them in her mouth and chewed them up. Its so not like her, she used to give any meds right back to me. Dont get me wrong… they are all put away. She got a stool and now they are even higher! HELP.

My daughter (will be 4 in Feb) she LOVES med too. But I give her gummie Vitamins in the morning and every time she wants med i give her a regular gummie bear. She doesn’t know the difference and everyone is happy!
Been there, done that……..
mine is 2 and on meds for reflux and asthma so she is ALWAYS getting one medicine or another (Prevacid daily, Singulair daily, Gas Drops most days, Mylanta on bad days, Ibuprofen when teething). I hate it, she loves it. She opens right up for anything she has to take and will see the bottles (very high in locked cabinets) when I take out one or more meds and she asks for them! It worries me so I keep them VERY secure where she cannot get them.
oh my gosh! my kids love medicine too! if one of my kids is sick or something, the other one gets all jealous! a few weeks ago my little one had an ear infection and the doctor prescribed ammoxicillin. i yelled, "nina come take your medicine" and she ran from the other side of the house to get it! and then my other daughter begged for some, and i said you can’t have it i’ll just make you some strawberry milk to drink out of a dropper! haha. we laugh about it because when i was a kid my mom said she had to chase me down to take medicine. you’re right though it can be scary! i keep all of the medicine in a high cabinet and thank god for child safe caps! i tell my daughters that medicine makes you better when you are sick, but if you’re not really sick when you take, it can make you sick. that has been working lately, try that with your daughter.
Get a locked medicine cabinet right away! This can be extremely dangerous with something even as simple as rolaids, and if she’s climbing up on a stool to get them – that’s even more dangerous! Next time she needs to take medicine, try giving her adult flavored medication – not the sweet flavored children’s syrup. Maybe that’ll help divert her from wanting it.
My 4 year olds like to take medicine too. Had some allergy medicine for them the other night, and it was sitting on their dresser and my daughters kept asking can we take our medicine now. But they know the medicine is for when you are sick and not feeling well and that is the only time you take it. So tell her that medicine is for when you are sick .
My 9 year old loves Children’s Motrin because of the bubblegum flavor. I explained to him that he can only take medicine when he’s sick, and that it’s not CANDY! I know how you feel and I have a locking medicine cabinet so no chance of "candy sampling!"
My 4 year old likes all meds except the "red" colored syrups. You must put them in a locked cabinet RIGHT AWAY. Poisonings can happen SO quicky and without warning as you may not know when she has taken a deadly dose of something, just because she thinks it tastes good. That goes for kids vitamins too, too much can do ALOT of harm. Lock up all your meds, not matter how harmless they may seem, it’s ALWAYS a danger. Best of luck with you!!!
My daughter loves taking Children’s pepto bismal. She will say her tummy hurts just to get one. We finally caught on. Even the pink liquid Amoxicillan is a favorite. However, there is a white antibiotic she depises and won’t touch with a 10 foot pole.
The difference between your daughter and mine is that mine actually asks me for it. (She has been around a lot of medicines since birth. First, because of her medical issues. Then, because of mine. I have been taking daily medications for over 2 years now.) She has been taught that they are only to be used when you are sick.
You really will need to drill it in her head that she will get very sick if she takes medicine when she is not supposed to. That medicine is only to be used to make her feel better.
You’re doing good about keeping it out of her reach, but, I would suggest that you put a safety lock on it as well.
For
i have a 3 and 2 year old that loved medicine and one day they both got into the fridge and drank 2 bottle of tonsilitis medicine as they have normal caps not saftey caps and now the 2 year old wont take any medicine without me forcing him to have it as they got into trouble when they drank the 2 bottles…
It sounds like you have taken the first step, and that is putting the meds where she can’t get them. I think you just need to have a good chat with her and tell her that medicine is only for when you are sick. Even though it tastes good, she has to wait for mommy to decide whether or not she needs to take the medicine. This explaination should help her understand and the fact that she can’t get to them now will be of good assurance. Even if she still like the taste, she can’t get to them. Eventually, she will out grow it.
Good luck!
