You don’t have to have a rug on your hardwood floor. I too lived in a home that always had carpets. I wasn’t a fan of wood floors. I thought they made the home look to formal and not cozy. Now that I bought my own home…..both the living room and dining room have wood floors. I LOVE them. I don’t have an area rug in either room. It’s fine. You don’t move your furniture that often so scratching the floor isn’t really a problem. I plan on leaving the dining room as is, with no rug. However, the living room I am looking for a rug as the walls are beige, the new furniture is brown and the floors are light wood. The room needs color! So, I guess it all depends on the look you’re trying to achieve. A rug will make the area look a little smaller, but cozier. It may also help with any echos you experience in the room. The furniture will not look funny without a carpet.
They are not MANDATORY, but they certainly will protect your wood floors and add beauty to your room if the right size and colors are chosen.
If it were me, I would add area rugs.
I think rugs are very important on hardwood floors, for the main fact that they help protect it from your furniture. Especially people who visit. It also makes a large area look more cozy in my opinion.
Rugs do add a touch of warmth to a room, but they are expensive and attract dirt. I would rather have no rugs than cheap ones that roll up on the sides. I have lived both ways but I do prefer the look of a nice rug underneath big furniture.
i wud say it depends on the theme of ur house.. plus how much time n money u can spend on CLEANING the rugs… i had been thru this problem when we did our house.. we had rugs. but after 6 months i had to dispose them at garbage value coz we had to get rid of them.

Area rugs anchor furniture, weight the room and add visual connection when used on hardwood flooring or large tiled floor surfaces. Without the rug, furniture appears to float without connection on a huge island of flooring. The rugs help break up the space and tell the eye what is visually important in the room. They also do literally add warmth. And, they do feel nice and make a space feel more cozy.
They aren’t mandatory but your room will look more pulled together and defined with a large rug. It will also give it a warmer more cozy feeling. I do the same even with carpeted areas. It just gives a nice finished touch.
