Should I get a dining room table (bar) with 2 bar stools or a table with 4 chairs if I live alone?
Usually no one comes to visit me, and when I rarely do have company, it’s just one person. I’m moving into an apartment by myself. I feel that I should invest into a nicer dining room set one day when I get married and move into a house with a dining room. I have a small dining room, the kind you typically have in a 2 bedroom apartment. If more than one person comes, we’ll just have to eat in the living room or something. Does it make sense to you for me to just have the bar table and 2 barstools or should I buy a cheaper set with 4 chairs?

I think you answered your own question … you don’t really have a need for a table and 4 chairs right now!
Buy what works for your current home and situation. True, you’ll probably get married one day (have kids, maybe … all that) but there’s no point in buying that dining set yet if you don’t have space or a need for it. Marriage might be years down the road and your tastes will likely change by then. Or a set you’d choose now might not be right for a future home.
Buy a nice bar or bistro set if that seems right for your current situation, and if the time comes to trade up … you’ll be able to recover most of the cost by selling it, as long as you buy decent quality and take care of it while you’re using it.
