I purchased a small desk at Crate & Barrel and when I opened the box, it had an awful smell but I went ahead and took it out because I was going to assemble it the next day. Sometimes household goods smell for a few days (i.e., carpeting, sofas, etc.). I found out that this desk was probably treated with something that gives off formaldehyde in resins. Has anyone ever had this problem? Also, I can’t find the receipt in case I want to return. I place the unassembled desk on my deck for now but wondered how long this odor will last. It is really sickening. It was shipped from China to the store.

Cat health issues! Fleas and tapeworms.?

Alright.. where to begin? I live in a two bedroom apartment in florida with 2 other people.. each of us had a cat. Originally it was just the two kittens (who are now four months old) but then my other room mate brought home her mother’s cat when she moved. A few weeks later we started noticing fleas. So the kittens were dewormed and I bought a flea treatment for the kittens.. A month later now though, they have tapeworms again. I called the vet yesterday to talk about getting a shot for treatment but she informed me that it’s pretty useless before dealing with the fleas. I purchased a spray for the carpeting, furniture and baseboards of the walls..manages to apply it yesterday in the living room at least for the first time.. and vacuumed and disposed of the contents out in the dumpster in a sealed bag.. changed the litter boxes and wiped them out before refilling.. Here’s the real issue though.. my room mate (with the 3rd cat) is a horrible pet owner, really.. She barely pays any attention at all to her cat, and even though she has fleas.. has not brought her to the vet, combed her, or bathed her.. she rarely changes the litter box (I have to do it for her) .. and the damn cat isn;t fixed.. it’s a girl.. and mine are two boys 4months old.. Let’s make matters even more complicated still, she’s invited a friend of hers to stay with us for a few days now, with NO warning whatsoever.. not like I had an option to say no without being a total dick since he was already here with all his luggage and such. There just could not possible be a worse time for her to do this, really.. he seems like a polite person, but since he’s in the living room now.. I don’t know how I’m going to even begin to deal with the fleas.. The spray I have is toxic to inhale.. or absorb through skin or membranes.. so I have to lock the cats in the bedrooms to apply it in the living room.. and be sure to open the windows (we are on the second floor) to air out the apartment while it dries.. I don’t want to put off treating them any longer than I have to, since the worms in the kittens stools are about an inch.. inch and a half long! Gross, I know.. and I feel horrible about it, I really do. I want to give them a bath with flea shampoo I had purchased.. I may still do that anyway tonight.. and then apply the advantix (I think that is the brand) I got from the vet. It seemed to rid them of fleas for about 3 and a half weeks.. before I noticed them scratching again. I’m just really aggrevated.. I want so badly for her to be out of the apartment, or at the very least to be rid of her annoying, neglected siamese cat. Someone like her should not have a pet in my opinion.. there are many days she forgets to even feed her.. and so I do that too.. along with picking up after her hairballs, and cleaning the waste she leaves behind when she poos outside her box on the kitchen floor! I spend so much time catering after her animal.. and she KNOWS we have a flea problem, but she invites company over without even asking first. I don’t know if maybe I’m over-reacting.. but I don’t think I am.. I didn’t get the chance to tell her about the worms yet, I just noticed them yesterday morning.. I guess I’ll just text her that info. What should I do? I’m overwhelmed.. If I give them a bath with the flea treatment and then apply the advantix later after they have dried will it work okay? Or should I wait to do the shampoo and just apply the liquid treatment to the back of the necks on the skin? I need to at leats get them off of them so I can take them to the vet.. I don’t want to wait! But with the company here, I feel I have no option.
I just want to know if I’m going about handling this the right way.. or if there is something more I can do.. and if I should take the house guest into account here.

I have a burgundy leather nailhead sofa. I have an overstuffed chair of both burgundy and a rich gold in an aztec pattern. I’ll also be purchasing a nice rustic rocking chair. My curtains are also a rich gold with a muted pattern. Beige and cream tile is on the floor and I have a large burgundy braided rug that’s currently used with this set (not committed to the rug). The den, great room, and dining room are open to each other (beige carpeting in den and parts of great room).
Clearly I have a lot of beige, burgundy, and gold (in that order). What color should I paint the walls?

cons of vinyl flooring?

We have a duplex with a great room–would like to know if vinyl flooring would be a good idea for kitchen, dining and living room. I am concerned about dents in floor from furniture. If any one has experience with this type of flooring–please give me some advice. I am sick of carpeting but I can’t afford to pay for ceramic tile or wood–is vinyl a good option?

Hallway can be seen from dinning room and living room. It is sage green. Furniture is mohogany and forest green. Carpeting is burber with specks of green gray with light background. I’m thinking of painting kitchen gray but struggling with what color to paint living room. What do you think?

who do i call to fix broken furniture?

my kitchen cuburb just broke, and i dont know who to call to fix it. ive called places like art van, some people out the yellow book like carpeting, and furniture people, but so far no ones been able to help. if the type of people im looking for could you leave the name of their job description, or the name of any companies that can help.

The lower class Romans (plebeians) lived in apartment houses, called flats, above or behind their shops. Even tradesmen might have chosen to live in an apartment-building compound over their store, with maybe renters on the upper stories. Their own apartments might be quite roomy, sanitary and pleasant, occasionally with running water. But others were not that nice.
In the flats an entire family (grandparents, parents, children) might all be crowded into one room, without running water. They had to haul their water in from public facilities. Fire was a very real threat because people were cooking meals in crowded quarters, and many of the flats were made of wood. They didn’t have toilets in the flat so they had to use public ones.
The upper class Romans (patricians) lived in single family homes, which in Ancient Rome meant the great grandparents, grandparents, parents, and kids of one family lived in a home together. Homes were made, quite often, of brick with red tile roofs, with rooms arranged around a central courtyard.
The windows and balconies faced the courtyard, not the street, to keep homes safe from burglars. There were paintings on the walls and beautiful mosaics on the floor. There was very little furniture, and no carpeting. Wealthy Romans might have a house with a front door, bedrooms, an office, a kitchen, a dining room, a garden, a temple, an atrium, a toilet, and a private bath.

What colour curtains should I buy?

The colour scheme in my apartment is pretty neutral, cream coloured walls with pinkish/brown carpeting and white tiles in the kitchen, dark wood furniture. The one thing that really stands out is my couch which is a deep red. I’d like to have something not too dark but not bland either. My apartment is fairly small, if that makes a difference. Any suggestions would be appreciated :) Thanks in advance.
Also, i don’t really want sheer curtains, so black is definitely out of the question. It can get a little too bright in here.

desk too short for chair/legs?

My new desk is too short – I need to prop it up – the legs are two parallel metal bars that sit on the floor from front to back on both sides…not the typical 4 distinct legs…so the plastic riser things from Ikea wouldn’t work. Also have the desk on carpeting rather than hardwood floor so makes it trickier to raise up something stably. Would love a hint on products or cheap-o DIY solutions

I just bought a new living room set. Sofa, love seat and chair pictured here: http://www.globalfurnitureusa.com/popup.php?id=1147&cat_id=6&page=&contain_id=1

I would have preferred brown leather pieces, but I got a great deal on the black set. My furniture is an expresso finish. I’ve seen this paired with black leather in other furniture (chairs and bar stools) and have seen a similar table paired with a black leather set and a rust colored carpet, so I know they can worh together, but dont know how best to "marry" the brown and black pieces. I’m guessing I should use throws and pillows, but not sure what colors would be best.

The sofa, loveseat and chair are black leather. Furniture is expresso. Walls are eggshell white. Carpeting is a taupe. (this is a rental so I’d prefer not to paint the walls)

What colors would be a good choice? Any suggestions where I can buy the throws and pillows?
Just to clarify the brown expresso furniture that I’m referring isn’t another couch or chair. The expresso pieces are wooden side tables, coffee table, and a tv stand.
