The boy woke up suddenly, excited from the dream he had about the zoo. He leapt out of bed and pulled his Spiderman curtains open. The crisp golden sun touched his face. He was so happy that his smile would have made the whole world dance in delight He remembered it was the day that he was going to see all the wonderful animals, especially the Gorillas because he was in love with the book “Tarzan Adventures”. His mum read it to him every night before he went to sleep, and he wanted to see the animals for real. His excitement rushed up his body, so much so he rushed to the bathroom. He stepped on to the stool and turned the tap, washing his face and hands. He opened the cabinet which was next to the mirror and took out his ultra cool “Iron-Man” toothbrush; he felt invincible. He brushed his teeth very quickly and wiped his face with his Pyjamas. Carefully, minding the toys which lay across the stairs and passage, he hurried downstairs to the kitchen.
He climbed onto his chair to have his breakfast. His mum had prepared him cornflakes in his own personalised “Star Wars” Bowl. He started to stir the cornflakes so that they looked like a whirl pool. He then imagined the spoon was an aeroplane and scooped the milk into his mouth. He saw his green light sabre toy next to his bowl and pretended the spoon was facing the light sabre in a battle. Soon, the milk was all over the table and he was covered in cornflakes!
“You always spill milk everywhere, eat your cereal properly now honey”, said his mum.
She started to iron the clothes she had prepared for him to wear to the zoo. The special day trip meant he had to look the part and it was a day that his mum wanted him to remember. She wanted him to look good for the pictures she was going to take and add to his childhood album. She scurried around trying to find his sweater.
“Mum, what are you looking for?” he asked his mum.
“Your sweater sweetie pie”, she replied.
“I can see it out in the garden mum on the washing line”, he told his mum.
She unlocked the garden door and a gust of wind blew inside. He watched his kite soar straight up into the sky but his mum blocked the view from where he sat. He looked horrified, as he thought his big red kite had been blown away. He jumped off the chair and headed towards the garden.
“Sweetie pie, please can you get me your sweater from the washing line”, his mum asked him.
He then leapt barefoot onto the garden floor. “Put your shoes on”, his mum said anxiously.
“But mum!” he replied.
“No excuses, don’t be a naught boy now!” she told him.
He quickly put on his ‘”Buzz Light Year” shoes that flashed coloured lights every time he took a step. His kite was nearly blocking out the sun, and he thought it was too late. He then burst out laughing; clutching his stomach at how he didn’t see the thin piece of rope from the kite that was attached to his bike which lay on the ground. He felt relieved. He picked up his bike and rode it around the garden with his kite attached to the handle bars.
“Honey, please can you stop playing and get me your sweater”, she told him from inside the house.
The boy climbed up the ladder which was next to the sweater on the washing line, and took the pegs off it, tying it round his waist he climbed down gently. He started to walk back into his house but his pocket felt light, his light sabre toy had slipped out of his pocket and dropped on to the top step of the ladder. He ran back quickly and climbed up the ladder again, and then the telephone rang inside the house.
His mother went to get the phone, and he could see her as he climbed the steps. Her smile turned upside down. He saw her hand cover her mouth in shock. His stomach turned as if he could see that she was becoming upset, he didn’t understand what was going on. He looked helpless for his mum, and looked at his green light sabre. He wanted to be a hero like Luke Skywalker by helping his mum. He recalled how just like Luke Skywalker, his didn’t have a father figure and he realised there must be a lot of pressure on his mum to take care of him and everything else.
He took off his shoes and ran into the kitchen where his mum was sitting.
“Mum, why are you upset?” he asked her.
“Nothing for you to worry about dear, we have to get ready to go to the zoo”, she replied.
He went upstairs and flipped through his picture book, which he made himself of all his favourite super-heroes. He came across Spiderman and next to it said “with great power comes great responsibility”. He looked confused because he didn’t understand what it meant so he put the book under his arm and went downstairs.
“Mum, what does this mean” he asked her, showing her his picture book.
“It means when you have a lot to deal with you become responsible, and have to act mature, something you will go through as you get older dear”, she told him.
A tear emerged from her eye and hit the boy’s shoulder like a bullet.
“Don’t cry mum, when I become superman everything will be just fine”, he told her.
“I’m sure it will honey, I’m sure it will”, said his mum.
“I love you mum, there is no reason to be upset, I’m here for you”, he told her.
“So am I, now let me change your clothes for you”, she told him.
After his mum changed his clothes, she packed his “Tarzan Adventures” book into his bag and then they went to the zoo. His face was star struck when he arrived at the zoo; to him it was like a child with an Amusement park all to himself. He let go of his mum’s hand and ran like the wind towards the Gorilla’s cage. He started to make beat his chest and make awkward sounds Gorillas do, and the Gorilla did it back. It was as if both of them were having a conversation. His soft hands made the Gorilla feel comfortable as he petted him, and it was a miracle the beast didn’t react because apparently he hated people touching him or even looking at him for that matter.
The Gorilla touched his stomach with h
