We recently bought a house and since then, my mother-in-law has constantly been trying to decorate it. Her style is NOT my ideal. We recently had an argument over whether there should be bar stools at the island in the kitchen (she said yes, I said no). She thinks we need a bigger table (a glass top, even though we have 2 boys under 4) and she doesn’t like our curtains (which I made and my husband and I love). She’s always buying things she thinks we need for the house (sometimes expecting us to pay her back, even though we never told her to buy them and really didn’t want them). She’s bought god-awful drapes, that are just sitting in our closet because I think they’re hideous (and I’ve told her so). The most recent is that she has bought a set of bar stools for our kitchen (which I didn’t want, and she knows that) for a birthday present for my husband. Oh yes, it’s a birthday present, so she knows I won’t say anything against it. How can I get her to butt out without hurting her?
I’ve purchased some furniture for my combined living room/dinig room. I bought this olive colored livingroom set and a black/gray pub set with the brown leather chairs. I’m trying to keep everything together as far as the color goes. I’m kinda of confused now that I am trying to match the curtains. I’m not sure what color to get. I also wanted an area rug because my floors are acid stain concrete (brown) and it gets cold. Can someone please help with decorating skills. Thanks
My home is a 1035 square foot 2 BR 2 bath condo. My style is pretty traditional.
My main bathroom is off the hall, one door away from the living room and would serve the second bedroom (although I currently use that bedroom as a media room) and as a powder room for visitors (not overnight guests). It is a full bath 5′ x 8′ with no windows. The tub is along the 5′ east wall leaving 5 x 5. The entrance door is on the 5′ west wall almost all the way to the south. Along the north wall from the west corner is a 36 inch vanity (black with a faux marble one piece sink and top – white with a slight grey cast) then the stool sits between the vanity and the tub. Above the vanity is a 22×28 inch mirror with a plain black frame. It is hung with the long sides on the verticle.
I need to tile the floor and tile around the tub. I want to keep the vanity and the white sink, stool and tub. When I redo the tub area I could convert it to a tub/shower but am not sure it’s necessary. I have a light fixture box directly above the vanity mirror and wonder what I should do for lighting. I am willing to move the electrical box(es).
I want advice on floor tile type, size and color and the tub surround.
Also with the tub surround if I add a shower how high should I take the tile? If I add a shower should I get a shower door or curtains?
How high if I don’t add the shower?
I could also use advice on paint color. All trim throughout the condo is white. The living room and hall are a blue green (it’s close to Sherman Williams 6757 Tame Teal – http://www.sherwin.com/visualizer/ ). The kitchen (farther away) is chamois. I like the chamois more than the blue/green. The hall, living room and kitchen floors are Pergo natural maple.
Thanks!

My house is open, we have a living/diningroom painted yellow, hardwood floors, and very nice dark beige curtains. Nice neutral colors, the familyroom and kitchen are one open space as well so I’m painting the back rooms sage and again my tones are neutral (furniture) so what color should I buy my blinds or curtains? I have 3 separate windows not too big not too small. The sun is out there so please help. Thanks in advance for your opinion.
I have a 1 1/2yr old spayed female (Polly). The long and short of it is, she’s evil. She’s been evil ever since we got her when she was a kitten but my girlfriend wanted to keep her anyway. (She doesn’t listen to me even though I’m always right). It seems like the cat does whatever she can to piss me off and it makes me hate her. She obviously knows when she does something wrong cuz when I get up to squirt her with a watergun or something she’s running and hiding before I enter the room. A list of the evil things she does would be: knocking over furniture, getting on the kitchen counter, pulling down curtains, steals washclothes, plays in the tub making a lot of noise, and climbing in the window blinds. I could go on but I’d rather not.
PLEASE HELP!!!!!
I want to paint every room, but I’m on a tight (college) budget. Standard 2 bed apt; rent, not own. All wood (trim, furniture and cabinets) is dark brown. The apt. is about 15 years old and I just want to cozy it up. Living room – light beige couch, light maroon curtains. Kitchen – all white besides a neutral color tile on floor and brown cabinets. Upstairs – All white w/brown trim. Baths – White sinks, neutral tile on floor, and muddy green color shower tile. I can figure out the accessories, I’m just interested in paint color suggestions. It’s just my boyfriend and I in the house, and we plan on staying for a few years, so I’d like to make it a little more cozy.
I have a color picked out for the kitchen/breakfast nook. It’s Edgy Gold from SW. I need something for the family room and it needs to coordinate. I tried SW Anjou Pear and it’s too yellow, I’m looking for somthing more golden. What do you think of SW Golden Fleece or maybe Butternut. I wish I could post pictures so you could see the fabrics I choose for the windows. The have golden browns, reds and greens in them. We also have a stone fireplace so I don’t want to go too brown and have the fireplace blend in. One last issue is that it is open to the foyer and a hallway. I’m trying to avoid having a different color in each area. I did that in my last house and got tired of it. I want something that flows.
My next "problem area" is the master suite. I have traditional Cherry furniture with red & gold bedding and curtains. I’m thinking SW Svelte Sage as an accent but I’m stuck for the other 3 walls. I want something warm and the room is large enough to handle a dark color
My kitchen is bright red. Click here to see what my living room looks like: http://good-times.webshots.com/album/559652974aHgnwe . The 4th and 5th pictures are photos that I really LIKE and they are the look that I’m going for.
What color should I go with for my living room? And what about the small half bath? I don’t like blues, and I LOVE neutrals. BTW I hate the paintings in our living room so try to look past those.
The only thing is, is that everything in my living room is brown already (curtains, couch, chair, furniture)… so I’m afraid if I paint the walls light brown that everything will clash. I love neutrals, reds, oranges, cream, etc. Anything warm. Let me know your ideas – thank you very much!
I know what you’re asking yourself "Why orange?! EWW!"
Well to make a long story short, my sister and I are college students who are fed up with dorm life, so we decided to rent a house (unfortunately it’s the only house available a week before school, so beggars cannot be choosers).
Every single room excluding the kitchen and bathroom have a hideous orange/burnt-orange carpet (I’m not sure which one it is so i put both).
What colors and themes can we use to decorate it?
Please note that I would like to avoid putting pictures of carrots and tomatoes on my wall (that was my mothers suggestion…)
I would like advice on colors of rugs, curtains, furniture, etc.
and possible themes I could use.
Everyone keeps telling my sister and I to use our own personal style, I consider myself to have a conservative yet fun style, but it doesn’t include orange (can you tell this is traumatizing me? lol)
Any help at all would be wonderful and I would really appreciate it!
A fresh coat of paint, some new furniture, kitchen tile and nickel plated bathroom fixtures would be enough for me. World peace can wait until the new curtains are installed.
My new house is white and tan throughout, with some green in the master bath & a little blue in the guest bath. Our couch & club chairs are brown. Other furniture is avocado, mauve & black. (The rug makes it work.) Curtains in the living room & master bedding are French blue, we have smoke sheers in the master. It all looks good, but I want to begin planning the walls & accents while ensuring we attract abundance, health, friends & happiness – not the opposite.
By Chinese horoscopes, I am metal, my husband is fire and my kids are both earths. I read a lot about feng shui, but don’t know how to apply it.
I created a Ba-gua:
front door/living room – South
master bedroom – Southwest (head of the bed – Southwest/West wall, MA door faces Northeast)
master bath – Western corner
kitchen & laundry room – Northwest
family room (with fireplace) and office – North
guest room is Northeast
guest bath is East
children’s bedroom is Southeast
What are inherant obstacles? Fixes/Tips?
Last night I went and did a little more digging. My Kua # is 4. My husband’s is 6. Hubby’s year sign is fire sheep and fixed element is fire. By year I am a metal pig and my fixed element is water.
I do find not only is some information I read contradictory, but of course my husband and I are cancelling each other out. 3 1/2 weeks after we moved here I was fired unexpectedly from my job of 3 1/2 years, which is causing terrible financial problems. I am also concerned especially about our health. I am interested in the flying stars method, but don’t know how to apply it, and is it for the whole house or for each room? Thanks very much for your help.

my parents are renovating the house, the first thing they did was renovate their bedroom (paint and all) and add an ensuite to their bedroom. next was the kitchen, then they added an extension to the family room. all the while little ol me is downstairs in a excrement hole. i have ripped and torn carpet from the 70′s. filthy 20yo curtains, my room was made smaller for them to change the staircase (doesnt worry me) so i have exposed drywall, hasnt even been patched and sanded. my other walls are just filthy blonde bricks. ANYWAY ive had enough, its like theve forgotten me, tomorrow ill be moving all my furniture outside and doing the prep work so they have 2 reno my room next. i need design tips, im thinking of going with white walls, black bedspread with black accessories and stainless steel lamps/ accessories as well but it seems a little bland. how can i spice it up a bit? id like to keep it within budget (id be payin for all accessories) but i am able 2 splurge on a few things
