How much work is involved in refinishing a deck?

My mom’s deck is old but sturdy (she’s renting too)… but I’d like to refinish the deck in exchange for their rent remaining the same for two years….

Before I open my mouth… just how much work am I looking at and where can I rent equipment???…

This is what I found on the internet…. didn’t look impossible.

Refinish a deck:

1. Use a hammer to refasten protruding nails.
2. Trim raised edges with a sandpaper block, electric sander, or plane.
3. As needed, clean gray or dirty wood with a solution of 1 cup bleach in a gallon of water. Apply with a brush or broom.
4. Use a pressure washer to clean the deck, being careful not to damage the wood with excessive pressure.
5. Apply stain or wood preservative following the manufacturer’s instructions.
6. Apply wood sealer following manufacturer’s instructions.

Where am I allowed to clean my nails?

So I take off my nail polish with acitone. The only problem that I have is that when ever I start to take my nail polish off, I have to stop because my mom is so worried that I’m going to wreck her counter top, bar stool, or floor leaving me with only a few nails cleaned. What or where should I clean my nails so that I don’t have any chance of wrecking my moms counter, stools, or floors so I can clean all of my nails at the same time?

has swivel wheels for the client to sit on for them to do manicure, pedicure, and nails. for my beauty salon.

I am building this fence along my drive for my wife’s birthday. Whew, tons of work. Cutting the trees down as i go and notching the wood. I am not using any nails to fasten it because i want it to be as rustic as possible. I would just like it to be around for more than a couple of years since i have put so much time and effort into building it. Any suggestions? Thanks

Thanks!

I already have fangs, funky contact lenses, horns, cane with skull and fake goatee. Now I need to decide on suit…

purple zoot suit (i’m leaning this way)

red zoot suit

and of course I can get red or purple in normal single or double breasted styles, if you’ve a reason to avoid zoot suit.

I’m going to a very large, costumes required halloween party of 600 or so friends, so over the top is what I’m going for, barring 10 hours in a makeup chair.

Points for reasons for your opinion :)
I forgot to mention the very important part that I"m going to paint myself all red with black highlights! So there’s already going to be alot of red, and long black nails, black around eyes and in depressions (highlight bones basically)
OK, i’m hearing red from alot of you and my friends. I guess I’m partial to purple, would it be that bad? You’re starting to sway me though.

This is a country style decorative sign with painted letters (using stencils), primed with oil based white primer, I want it to look rustic, but I want it strong. The barnboard is roughly 6-10 inches wide and I’m using several pieces assembled together.
First response is very helpful, I was going to assemble the sign before priming, so it will be glued before priming (now that I know it will be ok to glue it. Should I make a frame for backing it using nails or screws and some small dimension lumber or would the glue be sufficent (will weigh 10 pounds or so I calculate). I was thinking the frame (like an open faced box smaller than the total front) would lift it off the fence or wall where it will be hung and add some appeal. When I say rustic, I think although I intend to paint it, the feel and roughness of the wood shows through the painted surface. What do you think?

I have tried everything. I have 14 year old cat that has changed her behaviors all the sudden. Nothing in our house has changed and the other cat is fine. In addition to meowing constantly and peeing everywhere, she all the sudden is clawing everything, including our expensive leather bar stools, pool table, and pool table cover. I have set her up with clawing toys and boards. I have tried to file her nails and that was definitely not successful. I’ve also put sprays and aluminum down but she is not deterred. Either I may have to declaw her or I may have to get rid of her. Please help!

What can I sue my painter for legally?

I hired a painter (interior), who agreed to show up, pull nails, fill holes, and repair a wall. THEN, paint the walls.
Two weeks later, after she didn’t show up (and I had already paid her half), I told her forget it, I’d do it myself, just give me back the money I paid her MINUS the paint.
She told me she had been sick and would have "employees" come do it.
All they did was roll over the entire house, never filling holes, and they even rolled over the nails in the walls!
My 5-disc CD changer was open and turned on when I got home- I have not yet hooked it up. The discs were jammed, and it is now broken.
I have recently (3 weeks) had my ceiling painted. There is paint on both the new ceiling paint AND the floors.
Paint cans were left open on my kitchen counter.
I bought new furniture 9 days prior. There is a 6 X 7" paint stain on my new chair.
Now I want ALL of my deposit back, PLUS $ for the cd changer and chair. Can I also sue for what it will cost for paint/wall repair?

How do I keep the dogs off the furniture?

My boyfriend who I recently moved in with has two big dogs and before I moved in it was pretty much a bachelor pad. He slept with them in bed, doesn’t bathe them regularly, lets them get on furniture and have no off limit areas. The dogs have not been allowed in the bedroom for a few years now (they are so hairy, its gross) but I’m sick of the hair everywhere. I brush them 2x daily, tried changing their diet, and more baths. Nothing works!
Sorry this is long, I need to vent. My bf very rarely will clean up after them, and I do it all the time. I realize that I love him and his dogs are part of him so I have to accept that and love them too.
Now- our house is really small, probably the size of an apt. Only one main living area/kitchen with one couch. So the couch is the only place for me and other people to sit, I don’t think the dogs should get to ruin that too! It always has hair and their nails scratch the leather all up. Plus we don’t have a table so we eat on the couch.
Finally the bf agreed they should not be allowed on furniture, but how do I keep them off other than saying "no" when they try to get up there? They’ve been doing it for years, it will be hard to break. When I go to bed every night or leave the room for a min I have to flip all the cushions upside down and move the coffee table so they can’t get on the couch. Any help? We bought a tempurpedic bed for them to lay on instead, but I want them to learn no couch! Also I don’t want to have to keep picking up the cushions when I leave, I want to trust them.
my bf would never go for them being in crates, and our house is way too small for them. The dog bed takes up enough room as it is.

Mousetraps?! Cool idea, have you tried that?

Decorating apartment livingroom and kitchen?

I just moved into a 4 bedroom apartment at college with 3 other friends. We need some help decorating our living room and kitchen.

The kitchen has space on top of the cabinets we want to decorate and a wall as you come into the apartment, about 5 feet long.

The living room has a huge window on the back wall and then two long walls, one with the couch and the other with the tv. The dining table is off to the side near the tv. There is a chair in front of the window.

We cannot paint. And we cannot put large nails in the walls (small ones and pushpins are fine, and command strips are okay). We want something fun but not tacky. We are on a low budget as well, but if its nice we are willing to spend a little bit more. We don’t need to rearrange the furniture either.

Please give us some suggestions, like a theme or something and then what we could do with it.

Hi all. My husband and I live in an 1100 sq/ft house with two bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 hallway, a laundry room, small kitchen and big living room. We want to have the whole house tiled with carpet in the two bedrooms. When our puppies were growing up they discovered the worn holes in the old carpet and decided to make them bigger, tearing into them like an Easter Ham. (The house is about 26 yrs old and the carpet is at least 10 yrs old)

We are on a budget and are looking for options to save money on installation and materials. We are looking at tile and carpet that costs about per sq/ft and would like to get it installed by someone.

1) Would we really save money doing prep work ourselves? How much would this entail?: Im imagining pulling up the old carpet, pulling out the wood bits and nails, clearing out all the furniture, sweeping… cant think of what else. Is it worth the savings?

2) How much would it be to get it installed? We live in Bakersfield, CA.
BTW thats tile throughout the house and carpet in the two bedrooms (not carpet tiles)
We have thought about doing it ourselves. Maybe we need to revisit that. We have both laid tile before but not carpet. Id rather leave that to professionals cos I dont know it. The main reason why we wanted to get it installed is because it is the whole house not just one room and 5 professionals can come in and do it a lot faster and easier than my husband and I ever could. It would take us weeks and weeks. But maybe we can get relatives to help.

Kitchen chairs, how do you fix the legs?

Is there any other way short of garbage, should I use wood glue and rope because the nails they were built with will not hold. Is there any good furniture out there?

Alternatives to de-clawing my 18 month old cat ?

I have always been against having a cat declawed. However, I’m at my wit’s end. I found a kitten about a year ago. I got her shots and around 6 months we had her fixed. I was always told they usually calm down. She’s still a crazy lil’ thing. She has 3 scratching posts, plus 2 door knob hangers with cat nip. She has never used any of them. I even went as far as showing her what she was SUPPOSE to do. They have sat unused for almost a year. BUT, my bed has been used, our luggage, or childs bed, our couch, dinning room chairs, and our bar stools, which are wicker. I cut and file her nails at least every other week. I have tried the nail covers, and the sticky tape. Nothing! She is slowly ruining everything that we own. What are other alternatives? I don’t like the idea of ruining her personality, or causing her pain, but this is crazy. We’ve recently had a new baby that I have caught her hissing @.. It scares me to think that she might scratch her while we sleep. Any suggestions would be great!

Are these barstools fixable?

We’ve had the same barstools in our house for several years now. Probably around 7 or 8 years. I’m pretty sure they either came from Lowe’s or Wolohan Lumber (which went out of businees or is a company that went bankrupt, not sure). Anyway, the screws keep working out of them. They are light colored, stained wood. The whole barstool is wooden. Theyre like really tall chairs, with a back and everything. We’ve tried everything to fix them, we just cant keep screws or nails from working their way out of them. No one in our family is obese or anything, so the weight of someone sitting on them is not the problem, unless they just werent made good. My mother wants to replace them, but it will probably be a year before we get to do so, since we just paid for new flooring, and my sister and I are both in college. Is there any low cost way to fix them or are we wasting our time?
