I think that if you want some of the old stain to show through, you may can rough up the paint brush you are using but don’t use too much of the new paint to allow the old coat to come through. They may have specialty brushes you can buy at Home depot etc.. to achieve the look.
As far as carpet is concerned….if you are going to replace carpet with dark green stain on walls, I would go with a dark cream or light kaki color. Another alternative is to put slate tile down (or ceramic tile). I replaced carpet floor for my mom and dad, they wanted to get rid of carpet (very dated, lol) but now looks very "rustic" as they put it. New floor but looks old, so tile or slate might be a way to go. The stuff I put down for my parents was about 1.98 per square foot, off course they got free labor in process. Plus tile is easier to clean etc… I have a link below showing the tile. If you get some colored grout to fill in between tiles it definitely will give rustic effect.
