To play off your brown furniture either a sage green or a warm golden color. From the same color strip at least two shades lighter for the kitchen. Considering the furniture and kitchen cabinetry are dark wood I would go for the golden/amber paint color.
green and beige
yellow and green
Sounds like my set up. I really like that my kitchen flows right into the living room. I’ve gone with sage green and a cinnamon dark orange/rust ("Warm Spice" as JcPenneys Chris Madden calls it.) I have a few rust colors in the kitchen (a platter on a stand on the counter, and one rust drape on the dining window) Then i have the sage green all in the living area with the same drape on the living window and a reddish orangish area rug. I like to think they go together well. I wouldn’t go with one color, definitely pick a primary color and then an accent color.
Living room: light blue
Kitchen: an off-white coffee cream color
I say Red walls! They always look hip and modern here in Australia!
For the kitchen, I would consider beige, and for the Living room I suggest a bit darker beige
golds
What about differnent shades of tan? Or maybe a lighter tan color in your living room and a slight yellow (one that meshes well with the tan) for your kitchen? Tan goes well with dark brown, and with your dark countertops.
Good luck!
